DeSoto East Middle School (formerly DeSoto Junior High School) is part of the DeSoto Independent School district.  The campus, now known as DeSoto East Middle School, opened in 1962.  It served as the district's high school from 1962 until 1976 when the high school moved to its current location at 600 Eagle Drive.  At that time the campus was renamed DeSoto Junior High School and served grades seven and eight.  When DeSoto West Junior High School opened in 1987, the campus was renamed DeSoto East Junior High School.  As part of the district-wide grade realignment plan during the 2007-2008 school year, DeSoto East became a middle school serving grades six, seven, and eight.

Today, East Middle School employs 67 staff members, consisting of three administrators, two counselors, classroom and support teachers, paraprofessionals, office, and cafeteria staff. Pursuant to the No Child Left Behind Act, 95% of the teaching staff is “highly qualified," with 47% or our staff members holding advanced degrees.

East Middle School has a culturally diverse student population of approximately 600 students in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade.  The ethnic demographic distribution of students is as follows:  84% African American, 13% Hispanic, 1% White and 2% other ethnicities.  Based on current district data, 72% of the student population is identified as economically disadvantaged.

The learning community of East Middle School is comprised of culturally and economically diverse families from three feeder elementary schools:  Meadows, Northside, and Woodridge.  The faculty and staff realize the importance of parental and community involvement in the success of the school; therefore, parents and community members are encouraged to become involved in their child's education and in the school by volunteering, attending school events and becoming active members of the school's Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).
